Bushfires

A BUSHFIRE has started in Port Kennedy near Scientific Park, hours after the wildfire that threatened homes and lives in Karnup was brought under control. The fire has started in Scientific Park between Warnbro Sound Avenue and Secret Harbour Boulevard, Port Kennedy. There is no threat to lives or homes. Although there is no immediate danger people need to be aware and keep up to date. The second fire in three days raises fears that an arsonist is at work in the area. Some roads may be closed and motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully due to smoke. Helitacs and fixed wing water bombers have been sent to assist ground crews. A WILDFIRE that threatened homes and lives in Karnup and surrounding area has finally been brought under control. At 7.30am a bushfire 'advice' warning was still in force for people living between Stakehill Road, Mandurah Road, Pagonini Road, Winery Drive and Harvey Road. FESA said there was no threat to lives and homes, but residents needed to be aware and keep up to date with developments. The fire, which has burnt 350ha of bush, was contained and under control between Mandurah Road, Stakehill Road and Fletcher Road. However firefighters are wary of the strong sea breeze, due around 1pm, which could re-ignite the fire danger. The winds is expected to shift from south-east to south-west and the fire behaviour could again be more severe this afternoon. Train services on the Mandurah line have returned to normal. Homes, sheds, fences and livestock in the area have been saved after firefighters on Tuesday saved a Shell service station and the Marapana Wildlife World. Other than a stretch of Fletcher Road between Karri Street and Stakehill Road - which is open to local traffic only - roads are now open and power has been restored to all homes in the area. A crisis centre has been set up at the Rockingham Autumn Centre for those affected by the fire, which authorities believe was deliberately lit just before midday on Tuesday. Last night, about 40 houses on Fletcher Street in Karnup, 70km south of Perth, were under direct threat after the fire jumped containment lines. Residents were forced indoors to defend their homes and told not to leave unless their homes were on fire. As the wildfire wreaked havoc in the afternoon, train commuters south of Rockingham were left stranded for a second day, with Transperth putting on extra buses to alleviate congestion. Karnup and surrounding areas downgraded. FESA issued a bushfire 'advice' at 5.15am for people in the northern part of Karnup between Stakehill Road, Mandurah Road, Winery Drive and Harvey Road. A bushfire 'all clear' was issued for the southern part of Baldivis between Sixty Eight Road, Mandurah Road, Stakehill Road and Eighty Road. The fire is contained and under control between Mandurah Road, Stakehill Road and Fletcher Road. Motorists should avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site. The fire started at 11.51am yesterday and at least 350 hectares have been burnt. Firefighters still at the scene. Last night around 200 career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Bush Fire Service and Department of Environment and Conservation firefighters are on the scene. Two helitacs and five fixed wing water bombers were protecting crews and homes but cannot operate in the dark and have been released from the incident. If needed they will return at first light. Firefighters have saved homes, sheds, fences and livestock in the area. Unfortunately one shed has been damaged. Power restored to Karnup. Western Power has advised that all power has been restored to Karnup residents and surrounding areas after several blackouts yesterday and today.
